About this tour
Nizwa Ad Dakhiliyah Region and was previously the capital of Oman. The City is located about 170 km (2 hours) from Muscat. Nizwa Fort was built over 12 years in the 17th century by Sultan bin Saif al-Yaruba, the first imam of the Ya’aruba dynasty, the fort is famed for its 40m-tall round tower.
Itinerary
- The tour begins from Muscat in the morning with a 170 km drive through the mountain filled country side, which includes a visit to Fanjah, an ancient village.
- Nizwa is enchanting with its forts, the most famous being the Round Tower Fort, built in 1668 and laying claim to be the biggest fort in the Arabian Peninsula. It has an external diameter of 150 feet and is over 115 feet in height.
- There is a bustling souq which is renowned for the Friday cattle auction as well as intricately carved Khanjars and ornamental silver Bedouin jewellery.
- A visit to the fort is followed by a tour of the Bahla Fort, a UNESCO ‘World Heritage Site’. Believed to be the Persian origin, it overlooks the village of Bahla, considered to be the pottery capital of Oman.
- The final visit is to the Jibreen Fort, one of Oman’s most magnificent forts, built in the 17th century with painted ceilings and engraved wood carvings.
